Instagram chatbot: what it really does
An Instagram chatbot answers your DMs according to rules set in advance: a keyword, a first message, a delay. With PlugKit, your AI writes those rules and drafts your replies; it is not a robot that holds the conversation on its own in your place.
This page is part of the guide: Instagram auto reply
Three kinds of Instagram chatbots
Behind the word “chatbot” sit three very different tools. Knowing which one you are after saves you from paying for the wrong one.
1. The rule-based bot
It reacts to an event: a first message, a keyword, a comment, your absence. That is what Meta Business Suite’s automations offer (Auto reply, Away message, Custom keywords, Comment to message) and what most DM tools do. It is predictable and easy to test, but it only understands what you planned for.
2. The AI that answers on its own
Instagram is gradually rolling out AI auto replies: a professional account builds a “creator AI” in Meta AI Studio, then chooses who it answers (Instagram Help Center, read on 24 October 2026). Among third-party tools, ManyChat lists AI features (AI replies, AI goals, a knowledge base) from its Pro plan (pricing page read on 24 October 2026). This is the model people picture when they say “chatbot”.
3. The agent run by your own AI
This is where PlugKit sits. You talk to Claude or ChatGPT, which acts on your account with PlugKit’s tools: create an automation, read your DMs, draft a reply, send it once you approve. Your assistant is the brain; PlugKit gives it hands.
What PlugKit does, and what it doesn’t
According to its documentation, read on 24 October 2026, PlugKit covers these messaging jobs:
- Comment to DM: a keyword under a post, a public reply, your link sent privately.
- Sequences: prepared messages spaced out in minutes, triggered by a new conversation, an automation, a story reply or manually, with a stop when the person replies.
- Broadcasts: one message to the contacts in your inbox who can still be reached.
- Playbooks: ready-made setups, such as greeting every new DM.
- The unified inbox: your AI reads your conversations and drafts replies that you approve.
What the documentation does not describe: a robot that reads every new message and makes up its reply on its own, without you. A developer can build that behaviour: PlugKit emits an event for every message received, to route into their own system. But then it is their code that answers, not a ready-made feature. If you want an AI that converses by itself, look at Instagram’s creator AI or ManyChat’s AI features instead. Our ManyChat vs PlugKit comparison sets the two tools side by side.
A three-message mini chatbot, no code
You can get most of what a chatbot does with a well-written sequence. A sample request to your AI:
“For every new DM: right away, send a message asking whether the person is here for a quote, a question about an order or something else. If they reply, stop the sequence. If not, follow up once at 23 hours.”
The message goes out on its own, the question sorts the requests, and the follow-up at 23 hours stays inside Meta’s window. In our test on Occirank’s account, the greeting went out 8 seconds after a new contact’s first DM. The details are on the instagram welcome message page.
What is allowed
A messaging chatbot that runs through Meta’s tools or its official API plays by Meta’s rules. PlugKit states that it uses the official Instagram API with Instagram Login. The rules apply to everyone: professional account, a 24-hour window after the person’s last message, a single private reply per comment.
“Bots” that like, follow or comment in bulk on your behalf are another topic, which this site does not cover: here we only talk about answering people who wrote to you or commented.
How to choose
Three questions settle most cases. Must the bot answer open questions on its own, or only send prepared messages? Do you also want to publish your posts from the same tool? And how many accounts do you run? The answers point to one of these three options:
- Simple answers (greeting, away message, opening hours): start with Meta Business Suite.
- A visual builder, lots of conversations and built-in AI: ManyChat has a free plan and lists AI features from its Pro plan.
- One assistant for your DMs, your comments and your posts: PlugKit, from $49 per month for 5 accounts, with a 7-day trial and no credit card (prices read on 24 October 2026).
