The best social media management tool for each job

There's no single best social media management tool; there's the right one for your job. To automate DMs: ManyChat. To schedule posts: Buffer. For analytics: Metricool. For a customer care team: Sprout Social. To build on an API: Zernio. To run everything from your AI assistant, publishing and DMs included: PlugKit, the only one we tested on a real account (October 22, 2026).

Thoughtful sloth facing four screens, each showing a different way to automate the work

How we chose

This list is built on a method, not a hunch:

  1. 28 tools reviewed (29 profiles, as Late redirects to Zernio), all PlugKit competitors, from their official pages (pricing, documentation, llms.txt files) read on October 24, 2026.
  2. The same criteria for all: the job covered, the entry price billed monthly (or yearly when that’s all that’s shown), the billing unit (channel, account, seat, contact, brand), free plan or trial, comment-to-DM, API and MCP server.
  3. One tool per job, no overall score: a scheduler and a team suite don’t belong on the same scale.
  4. One tool tested in real conditions: PlugKit, by Jérémy, on Occirank’s Instagram account (the full test is in our PlugKit review). The others are judged on what their vendors publish.
  5. One precaution: a feature missing from an official page is written as “not mentioned”, never “missing”.

Disclosure: PlugKit is the only affiliate link on this page. That doesn’t buy it the top spot. It appears where it fits, and one section spells out where it doesn’t. Prices are re-checked every three months.

1. Automate DMs and comment-to-DM: ManyChat

ManyChat is the automated conversations specialist. It covers Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok and Telegram, plus SMS and email. On Instagram it goes deep: comment-to-DM, Follow to DM, Live to DM, story mentions, 60+ templates.

  • Price: Free plan (25 active contacts a month, 2 channels, 4 active automations), Essential at $17 a month (250 active contacts), Pro at $39 (2,500 contacts, AI, API).
  • Good to know: the bill follows your number of active contacts. Its official grid lists no publishing feature, and we found no official MCP server.

If you also want to publish and run it all from your AI, PlugKit does comment-to-DM on Instagram and Facebook and bills per connected account rather than per contact. Metricool (Flows) and Hootsuite (keyword DMs) also offer it inside a suite.

2. Schedule your posts: Buffer

Buffer keeps scheduling simple. It publishes to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn (Pages and profiles), X, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Bluesky, Mastodon and Substack. Free plan for 3 channels, then $6 per channel per month on Essentials, with an official MCP server and a public API.

Its inbox is for comments: no private messaging is mentioned. The full breakdown is in Buffer vs PlugKit, and the math for 5, 10 and 30 channels in Buffer pricing.

To pay even less per account: Publer. Professional costs $4 per account per month billed yearly, the Free plan covers 3 accounts (X excluded), and it also publishes to Telegram and WordPress. The API and MCP require the Business plan. For a very visual Instagram grid with link in bio, Later starts at $25 a month.

3. Analytics and reporting: Metricool

Metricool bills by number of brands: Free plan for 1 brand (20 scheduled posts a month, no LinkedIn or X), then $25 a month for 5 brands billed monthly. It keeps unlimited history from Starter, produces PDF and PPT reports, tracks Facebook, Google and TikTok ads, and opens its MCP server even on the Free plan.

Worth noting: its Flows do comment-to-DM on Instagram, at no extra cost “for a limited time”. Good to know: X is a paid add-on, and neither WhatsApp nor Telegram is on its network list.

4. Team customer care: Sprout Social

For a team sharing a stream of messages, Sprout Social is built for the job: consolidated inbox (from Standard), message tagging, sentiment, message spike alerts, review management, social listening as a module, productivity reports and helpdesk integrations. 30-day trial with no card.

The price follows headcount: $79 to $399 per seat per month billed yearly. The API is reserved for Advanced. The math for 1, 3 and 10 seats is in Sprout Social pricing, and the comparison with an AI agent in Sprout Social vs PlugKit.

If listening and governance come first: Hootsuite. $99 per user per month billed yearly (10 accounts), social listening, an inbox covering Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, X and TikTok, keyword-triggered Instagram DMs, and official MCP servers ready for ChatGPT and Claude. If the per-seat budget is the blocker: Sendible includes unlimited users from $35 a month.

5. Connect social networks to your code: Zernio

For developers, Zernio (formerly Late) is a very broad API: 16 social platforms, 8 ad networks, messaging, comment-to-DM with a follow gate, sequences, broadcasts and an MCP server. Your first 2 accounts are free, then $6 per account (3 to 10), $3 (11 to 100), $1 beyond.

Two caveats. Several meters add up (accounts, messages beyond 10,000 a month, X, ads). And from 27 to 121 accounts, PlugKit Pro costs less than Zernio: $97 versus $99 at 27 accounts, $97 versus $108 at 30. At 26 accounts, Zernio is still cheaper ($96); at 122 accounts both come to $340, and beyond that Zernio is cheaper again. For a SaaS company connecting hundreds of clients, Ayrshare (from $149 a month, 14+ networks) is the other established option.

6. Run your social from your AI, DMs included: PlugKit

This is the job PlugKit was built for. It isn’t one more dashboard: it’s an API and an MCP server (https://api.plugkit.co/mcp, 103 documented tools) that let your AI assistant publish to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, X and LinkedIn, answer DMs from Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram in a single inbox, and run comment-to-DM, broadcasts and follow-up sequences.

What we checked ourselves:

  • An “AUTO” comment under an Occirank post triggered a public reply and a DM within seconds (October 22, 2026).
  • A welcome message went out 8 seconds after a new contact’s first DM, and the follow-up was set at 23 hours to stay inside Meta’s 24-hour window.
  • Over 30 days, Occirank’s analytics surfaced two slots that stood out, Monday at noon and Thursday at noon.

Send your link by DM to every Instagram comment (no code) (Video in French) PlugKit connected to Claude: a comment-to-DM automation created in plain language, then tested with a real account. Three limits: one message per comment within 7 days, the 24-hour window, the price.

Prices read October 24, 2026: $49 a month for 5 accounts, $97 for 30, then $3 per account from 31 to 100. 7-day trial with no card, one connected account during the trial. The math for your number of accounts is in PlugKit pricing.

Other options for AI agents. Blotato includes the API and a 35-tool MCP from $29 a month for 20 accounts, with keyword DM automation on Instagram and Facebook (reply-only); its trial requires a card and excludes the API and MCP. Postiz, open source (AGPL-3.0), can be driven by MCP from $29 a month for 5 channels, with no message inbox mentioned. And several suites also open an MCP with their own scope: Buffer (scheduling), Metricool, Hootsuite, Sprout Social (analysis).

When PlugKit isn’t the right pick

An honest comparison also says where its affiliate link loses:

  • You want to start at $0: PlugKit has no free plan. Buffer, Metricool, Publer, ManyChat and Zernio do.
  • You want a visual calendar and team approvals: PlugKit doesn’t highlight those. Buffer Team and Later offer both, Sendible offers approvals.
  • You post to Pinterest, Google Business Profile or a LinkedIn company Page: PlugKit doesn’t cover them.
  • You want to automate TikTok DMs, SMS or email: that’s ManyChat’s turf.
  • You need social listening or review management: look at Sprout Social or Hootsuite.
  • You only want to publish to 20 accounts: Blotato lists 20 accounts for $29 a month.

The right order: write down your three biggest social chores of the week, then pick the tool that removes the most of them. Not the one with the most features.

Hootsuite advertises an AI chatbot and automated replies in its inbox, Vista Social keyword DM automations, and Metricool its Flows. ManyChat is a dedicated chatbot builder but doesn't list publishing. PlugKit runs welcome messages and follow-up sequences from your AI assistant.

Do these tools have an MCP server for Claude or ChatGPT?

Many do: Buffer, Metricool (even on the Free plan), Hootsuite, Publer (Business plan), Zernio, Blotato and PlugKit document one; Sprout Social has announced one for analysis. We found no official MCP server for ManyChat as of October 24, 2026.
