Instagram 24 hour rule: the window that decides if your DM goes out
The Instagram 24 hour rule means a tool can only send someone a free-form message within 24 hours of that person's last message. After that, the conversation stays closed to automations until the person writes again, and on Instagram no message template reopens it.
This page is part of the guide: Instagram auto reply
The rule as Meta applies it
Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp share the same base: a free-form message is only accepted within 24 hours of the contact’s last message (PlugKit documentation, section “The 24-hour window”, read on 24 October 2026). Meta’s developer documentation says the same thing: “For most user actions, it lasts 24 hours.”
Three practical consequences:
- The clock starts from the person’s last message, not yours. Your own messages do not extend it.
- When the person writes again, a new 24-hour window opens.
- Someone who has never written to you has no window: a tool cannot message them first, except through a private reply to a comment.
This framework covers messages sent by an app through Meta’s API: PlugKit, ManyChat, automations. The documentation cited here does not describe what you type yourself, by hand, in the Instagram app.
What it looks like on a real account
On 24 October 2026, we counted the conversations in Occirank’s Instagram inbox: 160 conversations, only 3 of them inside the 24-hour window. Every other one was closed to automated messages.
That number changes how you handle your DMs. A message left unanswered for three days can no longer be rescued with a tool: the person has to come back on their own. And a “message to all my contacts” only reaches a small part of your inbox.
An hour-by-hour example
- Monday 10 am: someone writes to you. Their window is open until Tuesday 10 am.
- Monday 10 am, a few seconds later: your welcome message goes out. It extends nothing, because it is your message, not theirs.
- Tuesday 9 am: your follow-up, scheduled at 23 hours, goes out while the window is still open.
- Tuesday 11 am: with no reply from them, no automated message can go out anymore.
- Thursday 3 pm: the person finally answers. A new window opens, until Friday 3 pm.
The exceptions, and why not to count on them
- The private reply to a comment: once, within 7 days of the comment. It is the exception PlugKit’s documentation cites for Instagram and Facebook, and the one every comment to dm automation relies on.
- Two cases described by Meta: after an ad that opens an Instagram Direct conversation, the window “may last up to 7 days”; and an app can tag a response to use “the separate 7-day Human Agent window”, reserved for replies written by a person. PlugKit’s documentation, read on 24 October 2026, does not describe these two cases: with PlugKit, work as if the window closed at 24 hours.
What about message templates? They exist, but for WhatsApp: outside the window, WhatsApp accepts a template approved by Meta. On Instagram, asking for the list of templates returned an error during our check on 24 October 2026. Telegram has no such limit, according to PlugKit’s documentation.
Work with the window, not against it
- Answer new messages fast: that is when the window is open. An instagram welcome message replies right away and asks a question; if the person answers, you get 24 more hours.
- Follow up at 23 hours, not 24: in our test (Zéro Corvée video 6), the follow-up was set at 23 hours, because at exactly 24 hours it would land on the limit and fail.
- Accept a clean failure: at PlugKit, a sequence step that falls outside the window is recorded as failed for that person, and the sequence carries on. For a broadcast, refused sends show up recipient by recipient in the delivery log.
- End every message with a question: every reply reopens the window.
- Sort your inbox by window: ask your AI to show you the conversations that are still open first, the only ones a tool can answer.
The same rule on other messaging apps
| Messaging app | After 24 hours without a message from the contact |
|---|---|
| Window closed, except the private reply to a comment (7 days, once) | |
| Messenger (Facebook Page) | Same rule as Instagram |
| Only a template approved by Meta can go out | |
| Telegram | No window, according to PlugKit’s documentation |

The window counts from the person’s last message, never from yours.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Instagram messaging window?
24 hours from the person's last message, and every new message from them opens another 24 hours. Meta describes two longer cases (a click-to-Instagram-Direct ad, and a 7-day window reserved for human replies) that PlugKit's documentation does not describe (both read on 24 October 2026).
Why isn't my Instagram auto DM sending?
Most of the time the window is closed: the person last wrote more than 24 hours ago. Next come a private reply already used on the same comment, a comment older than 7 days, or an account that is not professional.
How do I DM somebody on Instagram with a tool?
Only if they wrote to you within the last 24 hours, or by a private reply to their comment within 7 days. A tool cannot write first to someone who has never contacted you.
Can I message all my Instagram followers at once?
No. A tool can only write to people who have already messaged you, and only inside their 24-hour window. On 24 October 2026, 3 of the 160 conversations in Occirank's inbox were reachable.
Do message templates work on Instagram?
No. Approved templates are WhatsApp's answer to the closed window, not Instagram's: on Instagram, asking for the list of templates returned an error during our check on 24 October 2026.
