Instagram auto reply: what you can really automate

Leave a DM unanswered for more than 24 hours and Instagram no longer accepts a free-form reply. An Instagram auto reply answers in time for you: it goes out on its own when someone messages you or comments, with a greeting, an answer or your link. You need a professional account, then either the inbox automations in Meta Business Suite (the native way) or PlugKit, which lets your AI set everything up from a plain-English request.

What counts as an auto reply on Instagram

An Instagram auto reply is a DM sent without you typing anything, because an event triggered it. Four triggers cover the usual needs:

  • A first message: someone writes to you for the first time and gets a greeting.
  • A comment: someone writes a keyword under your post and gets your link privately.
  • Your absence: someone writes at night or over the weekend and knows you got the message.
  • A delay: a follow-up goes out after a set time if the person has not replied.

What does not exist: writing first to someone who has never sent you anything. PlugKit’s documentation puts it plainly: on Instagram, once the conversation window is closed, the only door left open is the private reply to a comment (read on 24 October 2026).

When an auto reply is worth it

Automating your DMs does not replace you. It does three precise jobs:

  • Never leave a new contact hanging while you are filming, sleeping or in a meeting.
  • Deliver what you promised in a video (“comment GUIDE and I’ll send you the link”) without pasting the same message under every comment.
  • Follow up once, cleanly, on a conversation that was about to die.

If you only get a few messages a week, answer them by hand. If your videos ask people to comment, or your DMs pile up, automation gives you back time and leads.

How to set up auto reply on Instagram with Meta’s tools

Meta has its own automations in the Meta Business Suite Inbox, for a Facebook Page, an Instagram account or a WhatsApp Business account. According to Meta’s Business Help Center, read on 24 October 2026, the setup happens on desktop, not on mobile.

Step by step on desktop

  1. Go to Inbox in Meta Business Suite and check the business portfolio selected in the top-left dropdown.
  2. Click Automations, then Create automation in the top right.
  3. Pick a template: Auto reply (a greeting when someone messages you for the first time), Away message, Frequently asked questions, Custom keywords or Comment to message (a private message when a comment contains a keyword).
  4. Complete the on-screen instructions, then check the automation is on with the toggle below Status.

Two details from Meta are worth knowing. Custom automations are prioritized over the others. And if you turn on Meta Business Agent, your existing automations (away messages, instant replies) are paused.

In the app: frequently asked questions

In the Instagram app, business and creator accounts can show up to four frequently asked questions to people who are about to message them, each with an optional automated response (Instagram Help Center, read on 24 October 2026). It is handy for the questions you get every day: delivery times, prices, address. It is not a greeting, though: nothing is sent until the person picks a question.

The PlugKit version: your AI prepares, you approve

PlugKit is an API and an MCP server that give your AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT and others) access to your accounts. You add a connector with the address https://api.plugkit.co/mcp, sign in, then ask in plain English (every step is in our PlugKit tutorial). For example:

“When someone comments AUTO under my latest reel, reply publicly and send them the link to my video by DM. Followers only.”

Your AI shows you a summary, you check it, and PlugKit creates the automation on your account. Three building blocks cover auto replies (PlugKit documentation, read on 24 October 2026):

  • Comment to DM: one or more keywords, one specific post or every post on the account (including future ones), an optional public reply and a button to your link.
  • Sequences: messages spaced out in minutes, triggered by a new conversation, an automation, a story reply or manually, which stop as soon as the person replies if you ask them to.
  • Playbooks: ready-made setups, such as “Welcome every new DM” (an instant reply, then a question). PlugKit’s pricing page lists them in the Pro plan (read on 24 October 2026).

The real test on Occirank’s account

We ran it for real, twice, on Occirank’s Instagram account:

  • The “AUTO” comment: a real comment from another account, then the public reply and the DM received within seconds (Zéro Corvée video 1, in French, 22 October 2026).
  • Greeting a new DM: the welcome message went out 8 seconds after a new contact’s first message, and the follow-up was set at 23 hours instead of 24 to stay inside Meta’s window (video 6, measured on 24 October 2026).

The video below shows the second test end to end, including the 24-hour trap. Our PlugKit review covers the other demos and the tool’s limits.

Native or PlugKit: how to choose

Criterion Meta Business Suite PlugKit with your AI
Where you set it up Meta Business Suite Inbox, on desktop In plain English, in Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client
Greeting and away message Templates to fill in Custom sequences, delays in minutes
Comment to DM “Comment to message” template Automation with public reply and button
Timed follow-ups Not described in the help page we read Yes, with a stop when the person replies
Beyond Instagram DMs Facebook Page and WhatsApp Business Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram and publishing your posts

PlugKit costs $49 per month for 5 connected accounts (Creator plan), with a 7-day free trial and no credit card (prices read on 24 October 2026).

The simple rule: if a greeting and an away message are enough, start with the native tools. If you want follow-ups, your link sent on every comment and one assistant for both your DMs and your posts, PlugKit becomes worth a look. If you are torn between PlugKit and a DM specialist, our ManyChat vs PlugKit comparison covers the prices and what ManyChat does better.

The 3 Instagram limits no tool can bypass

These rules come from Meta, not from the tool. They apply to Meta Business Suite, PlugKit, ManyChat and everyone else.

  1. A professional account. PlugKit’s documentation requires an Instagram professional account (business or creator), and Instagram limits frequently asked questions to those same accounts.
  2. The 24-hour window. A free-form message is only accepted within 24 hours of the person’s last message (PlugKit documentation, section “The 24-hour window”, read on 24 October 2026). In Occirank’s Instagram inbox, only 3 of 160 conversations were inside that window on 24 October 2026. The full story is on the instagram 24 hour rule page.
  3. One private reply per comment, within 7 days. Comment-to-DM relies on this exception. If two automations target the same comment, only one can send its message.

A fourth trap catches many people. Approved message templates, which let you write after 24 hours, are a WhatsApp feature: on Instagram, asking for the list of templates returned an error during our check on 24 October 2026.

Where to start

  1. Check your account: it must be professional, business or creator.
  2. Pick one automation to begin with: greeting new DMs, or sending your link to every commenter.
  3. Write like a human: who you are, what the person will get, the next question.
  4. Test from a second account before you mention it in your videos: message, comment, check the reply arrives.
  5. Never run two tools on the same posts: only one will send the private reply.

One automation at a time, tested with a real account, before you add the next one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up auto reply on Instagram?

With a professional account, open the Inbox in Meta Business Suite on desktop, click Automations, then Create automation, and pick a template: Auto reply, Away message, Custom keywords or Comment to message. With PlugKit, you ask your AI in plain English; it prepares the automation and shows it to you before it goes live.

Does Instagram have an auto DM feature?

Yes, in three forms: the inbox automations in Meta Business Suite (desktop), the frequently asked questions in the Instagram app with an optional automated response, and AI auto replies, which Instagram is gradually rolling out to professional accounts that built a creator AI (Meta and Instagram help pages read on 24 October 2026).

Do I need a professional account for Instagram auto replies?

Yes. PlugKit's documentation requires an Instagram professional account (business or creator), and Instagram's Help Center limits frequently asked questions with automated responses to business and creator accounts (read on 24 October 2026).

How much does an Instagram auto reply tool cost?

PlugKit costs $49 a month for 5 connected accounts on the Creator plan, after a 7-day free trial with no credit card (prices read on 24 October 2026). If a greeting and an away message are enough, start with the automations built into Meta Business Suite.

Is Instagram automation allowed?

Yes, when it runs through Meta's own tools or its official API. Meta offers its own automations in Meta Business Suite, and PlugKit states that it uses Meta's official Instagram API with Instagram Login. Meta's rules still apply: the 24-hour window and a single private reply per comment.

Can you automate an Instagram account?

Partly. Welcome messages, replies, comment-to-DM and post publishing can be automated through Meta's tools or its official API. Writing first to someone who has never contacted you cannot: outside the 24-hour window, the only open door is the private reply to a comment.
